After having 2 cocker spaniels as pets, our family became involved in foster care and rescue through our local animal shelter. It was during that time that we rescued our first bench english setter Maddie, who eventually became a very prominent member of our family. We were also fortunate enough to find and become acquainted with Maddie’s breeders–Jerry and Helen Vance. Through them we became involved in the world of English setters. We eventually added spinoni to the mix and found them to be delightful companions as well.
We derived our kennel name–BELA–from our three children. Our family has enjoyed competing in conformation, hunt tests, and obedience with our dogs. We do breed an occasional litter and sometimes have puppies or adults available. We do health checks on our dogs–BAER testing (hearing) and OFA (hip and elbow dysplasia) for the english setters and OFA (hip and elbow dysplasia), as well as eyes and hearts for our spinoni. As breeders, we are always striving to produce the complete dog–one that is attractive, birdy, biddable, and healthy. We are members of the Council Bluffs Kennel Club, the English Setter Association of America, the Spinone Club of America, and the Missouri Valley Gordon Setter Club.
